The best World Cup?

The football World Cup is by far the most eagerly anticipated sporting event of the year and I don’t think anyone can question why. What we have seen so far in Brazil has been phenomenal. It has had everything.

We saw Spain, Italy and England knocked out, we saw the likes of Colombia and Costa Rica go through to the Last 16 and into the last 8 and we had some thrilling last 16 encounters.

The Brazil Chile game was a treat to watch. It was end to end stuff and had both teams taken their chances, it could have been a tennis score. It was such an open game. It was surprising to see the game end at 1-1 and even though Brazil went through on Penalties, Chile deserve all the credit in the world for putting up a brilliant show during the game and throughout the tournament.

The Colombia Uruguay game saw a moment of brilliance from the excellent James Rodriguez and a slick team goal. Uruguay missed the class and penetration of Suarez who has let his team and country down. It’s the third time he has been involved in such an accident and I don’t have any sympathies for him. He is a professional footballer. What on earth was he thinking? That said, Uruguay looked predictable without him and Colombia eased their way through to the last eight.

Netherlands vs Mexico was always going to be a tight affair. Mexico have looked good throughout the World Cup and they took the lead through a brilliant effort from Giovani Dos Santos. Just when it looked as if Mexico will go through, Wesley Sneijder fired home three moments from time and Huntelaar coverted from the spot in injury time to break the mexican hearts.

The Costa Rica – Greece game was another thriller. Ruiz gave Costa Rica the lead before they had a man sent off. Greece equalized in injury time and it went on to penalties where the South Americans held their nerves to go through.

It has been enthralling, fascinating and a joy to watch. People are already labeling it as the best World Cup ever and from what we have seen so far, they might be right.
