Effects of Sugar On Your Brain

Resisting the delicious smell and glazing texture of halwa or kheer is very, very difficult . If you are not a fan of the desi delicacies then you must be fond of donuts, cakes or ice creams. When you eat such mouth-watering dishes you feel like heaven. One spoonful is enough for you to long for more and more until you become a sugar addict. Yes, that is right; you can become addicted to sugar just like people become addicted to nicotine, alcohol or cocaine. And when we face stressful days, it seems like nothing can cheer our mood except for a sweet treat. We might not eat properly for days but then on a single day binge ourselves with food overloaded with fructose or sucrose that soothes our minds.

However, various researches at top research institutions show that overloaded sugar causes not only health problems like diabetes but make us overweight, impairs brain functionality, adversely affects the heart, wrecks the metabolism and disturbs the liver functions. The refined sugar found in sweet food items has no protein, fats, enzymes, vitamins or minerals; it is only complex carbohydrates that borrow your body’s existing vital nutrients like magnesium, sodium, potassium and calcium to metabolize so that energy is consumed from the sugar. When you overload yourself with sugar, more existing nutrients are consumed leaving your body susceptible to bones and teeth diseases. Continuous intake of sugar causes over-acidic conditions that also results to additional consumption of nutrients. This can lead to accumulation of poisonous wastes that can reach to the nervous system and destroy the most important cells of the body; the nerve cells.

The worst part is, no matter how much experts spread the awareness, more than 80% of the world’s population opts for foods containing harmful sugar (thanks to the industrial lobbyists all around the world). Up till now, no government has taken any serious action against this issue. Another industry that benefits the most from the distribution of sweet snacks and products is the dental health industry. Continuous intake of sweet food items causes teeth and gum damage and provides dentists with their source of income.

There is no harm in eating sweet dishes once or twice a week and in adequate amounts but continuous intake of refined sugar can leave a person more craved, less tolerant, imprudent, preoccupied and of course unhealthy.  There are many simple ways through which you can overcome eating sugar and they do not even require inputting any additional efforts. Following are some unique yet simple tips to a healthy diet:

  1. Add more vegetables and fruits in your diet. Cook with different styles so that they taste better because these food items help suppress the hunger and cravings for sugar.
  2. Set time for meals in a day because it teaches the body to starve for food at specific times at a day and not at unusual timings.
  3. Having six to eight hours of sleep at night is also beneficial for suppressing the sugar cravings at unusual timings.
  4. Be friends with people who have similar missions regarding a healthy diet as you. It helps you in keeping you motivated and ignoring junk food cravings.
  5. Exercise is not only important for the obese but for apparently fit people as well, because it helps in keeping the digestive system and metabolism in order.

Sometimes, we become so indulged in our daily chores that we forget to take proper diet. A proper diet is important not only for keeping our body well-nourished but also to keep away bad habits. After all, it’s one of the oldest clichés in the world for a reason; health is the ultimate wealth!
